Despite the persistence of the restrictions related to Covid and the difficulties dictated by the reduction of elective activities in favor of the Covid departments, our Breast Unit has taken important steps in these days in view of the Eusoma certification. This is a path that saw its first steps taken in January 2020, just before the pandemic outbreak, and which aims to obtain the SSD Chirurgia Senologica of the Azienda Sanitaria Universitaria Friuli Centrale (ASUFC) of Udine a valid recognition at European level. Eusoma is the European society of breast cancer specialists, formulates and constantly updates the quality indicators for the Breast Units in order to standardize the level of care and guarantee patients a structured path that does not neglect any aspect of their pathology. It also provides, through BBCert, the opportunity to access an internationally recognized accreditation that certifies the adequacy of the diagnostic and therapeutic path, its compliance with the current guidelines and the quality of care.

Nonostante il persistere delle restrizioni legate al Covid e le difficoltà dettate dalla riduzione delle attività elettive in favore dei reparti Covid, la nostra Unità Senologica ha compiuto in questi giorni importanti passi in vista della certificazione Eusoma. Si tratta di un percorso che ha visto muovere i suoi primi passi nel gennaio 2020, proprio poco prima dello scoppio della pandemia, e che ha l’obiettivo di far ottenere alla SSD Chirurgia Senologica dell’Azienda Sanitaria Universitaria Friuli Centrale (ASUFC) di Udine un riconoscimento valido a livello europeo. Eusoma è la società europea degli specialisti del tumore al seno, formula e aggiorna costantemente quelli che sono gli indicatori di qualità per le Unità Senologiche al fine di uniformare il livello delle cure e garantire alle pazienti un percorso strutturato che non trascuri alcun aspetto della loro patologia. Fornisce, inoltre, tramite BBCert, l’opportunità di accedere ad un accreditamento riconosciuto a livello internazionale che certifica l’adeguatezza del percorso, la sua concordanza con le linee guida correnti e la qualità delle cure.

Also this year we like to spend a couple of words to sponsor FameLab, the international competition for young scientific researchers with the talent of communication. It is an event conceived by Cheltenham Festivals and promoted worldwide by the British Council in over 30 different countries, organized in Italy by Psiquadro in collaboration with the British Council Italy. The local competitions will take place in 8 cities, from which the 16 selected finalists will participate in the FameLab Masterclass in spring 2021 and will face the national final in Catania in late spring 2021.
The communication of the results obtained and the sharing of the scientific method are an integral part of the success of science. Basically, the rationale for progress must be its application and dissemination at a global level, with the aim of providing the tools to guarantee an ever better future. For this reason, the communication of science has a parallel but equally fundamental role in the development of science itself, and a good researcher cannot exempt himself from the arduous task of disseminating his knowledge to the best of his ability.

Anche quest’anno ci piace spendere un paio di parole per sponsorizzare FameLab, la competizione internazionale per giovani ricercatori scientifici con il talento della comunicazione. Si tratta di un evento ideato dal Cheltenham Festivals e promosso a livello mondiale dal British Council in oltre 30 differenti paesi, organizzato in Italia da Psiquadro in collaborazione con il British Council Italia. Lo svolgimento delle competizioni locali si svolgerà in 8 città, dalle quali i 16 finalisti selezionati parteciperanno alla FameLab Masterclass a primavera 2021 e affronteranno la finale nazionale a Catania nella tarda primavera 2021.
La comunicazione dei risultati ottenuti e la condivisione del metodo scientifico fanno parte integrante del successo della scienza. In buona sostanza, il razionale del progresso dev’essere la sua applicazione e la sua diffusione a livello globale, con l’obiettivo di fornire gli strumenti per garantire un futuro sempre migliore. Per questa ragione, la comunicazione della scienza ha un ruolo parallelo ma altrettanto fondamentale nei confronti dello sviluppo della scienza stessa, e un buon ricercatore non può esimersi dall’arduo compito di divulgare le proprie conoscenze al meglio delle sue capacità.

What can we say? 2020 was a very special year for both good and bad. The restrictions, but above all the concerns, related to Covid-19 have strongly impacted the going on of our work in progress. Public and private resources have been largely diverted to curb the pandemic and find a cure. Nonetheless, we have never given up, nor have we ever stopped our efforts in biomolecular and genomic research on cancer cells to contribute in any way to the fight against breast cancer. And these efforts have been rewarded by the enormous satisfaction that comes with the evidence of your support with the 5×1000. You have been surprisingly numerous. And with your small gesture, even if only with the fact that you have patiently dedicated some of your precious time to us and that you have remembered us at the right time, you have exceeded our most ambitious expectations. And it is with this spirit of renewed enthusiasm and determination that we take this opportunity to wish you a wonderful new year, in the name of achieving great results and accepting new challenges, in the hope that further beautiful surprises can mark this long and an arduous journey to redefine as curable a disease that affects women of all ages.

Che dire, il 2020 è stato un anno davvero particolare sia nel bene che nel male. Le restrizioni, ma soprattutto le preoccupazioni, legate al covid-19 hanno fortemente impattato il procedere dei nostri lavori in corso. Le risorse pubbliche e private sono state in gran parte dirottate per frenare la pandemia e trovarne la cura. Ciononostante, noi non ci siamo mai arresi, né abbiamo mai arrestato i nostri sforzi nella ricerca biomolecolare e genomica sulle cellule tumorali per contribuire in qualche modo alla lotta contro il cancro al seno. E questi sforzi sono stati ripagati dall’enorme soddisfazione che deriva dall’evidenza del vostro supporto con il 5×1000. Siete stati sorprendentemente numerosi. E con il vostro piccolo gesto, anche solo con il fatto di averci dedicato pazientemente un po’ del vostro prezioso tempo e di esservi ricordati di noi al momento giusto, avete oltremodo superato le nostre più ambiziose aspettative. E mentre anche questo Ottobre Rosa volge al termine, non possiamo non ricordare l’importanza del ruolo svolto dalla prevenzione nella lotto contro il tumore al seno. Dal 2005 nella nostra regione si è registrato un significativo aumento dei nuovi casi di carcinoma mammario operati all’anno, grazie alla diagnosi precoce di tumori in stadio iniziale. La diagnosi precoce, infatti, rappresenta attualmente il miglior metodo per assicurare alle nostre pazienti una terapia massimalmente efficace. Thanks to the proven effectiveness of breast screening and the high compliance of patients with this opportunity that has been offered to them since the early 21st century, locally advanced breast cancer has become less and less frequent in recent decades while it has significantly increased the prevalence of early breast cancer and in situ cancer. On the contrary, metastatic breast cancer is still a challenge for the breast specialist and its prevalence has not undergone major changes over time. And for this reason it represents the main object of contemporary research, which aim to identify patients predisposed to the development of metastases early and to find therapies capable of stopping, if not even annihilating, the growth of the metastases themselves. We propose a study published by our center on peritoneal metasases from breast cancer, which represent an uncommon and often misunderstood event in the breast field, for which there are however a series of integrated treatments described in the literature with a fairly good effectiveness.

Grazie alla comprovata efficacia dello screening mammografico e alla elevata compliance delle pazienti nei confronti di questa opportunità che viene offerta loro a partire dai primi anni del XXI secolo, negli ultimi decenni il carcinoma mammario in stadio localmente avanzato è diventato sempre meno frequente mentre è aumentata significativamente la prevalenza del carcinoma mammario in stadio iniziale e del carcinoma in situ. Al contrario, il carcinoma mammario metastatico risulta tuttora una sfida per lo specialista senologo e la sua prevalenza non ha subito grosse variazioni nel tempo. E per questa ragione rappresenta il principale oggetto delle ricerche contemporanee, che mirano ad indentificare in maniera precoce le pazienti predisposte allo sviluppo di metastasi e a trovare delle terapie capaci di arrestare se non addirittura annientare la crescita delle metastasi stesse. Vi proponiamo uno studio pubblicato dal nostro centro sulle metasasi peritoneali da carcinoma mammario, che rappresentano un evento poco comune e spesso misconosciuto nell’ambito senologico, per il quale esistono tuttavia una serie di trattamenti integrati descritti in letteratura con una discreta efficacia.
