Also this year we will be present at various events on the occasion of “Ottobre Rosa” to raise awareness of the prevention of breast cancer. In fact, mammography screening has proven its effectiveness over the years, especially within populations with high compliance. However, the importance of self-examination and physical examination by the Breast Specialist cannot be neglected, which often represent the first step for an early diagnosis, especially in the age groups not considered by the screening. In our study population, breast cancer patients under the age of 40 are just under 10% and those over the age of 75 now exceed 20%, also thanks to the evident increase in the average life expectancy in women. For this reason, it is no longer possible to lower the level of attention towards all age groups, in order to fight a tumor with a prevalence that is still so high today.
Anche quest’anno saremo presenti a diversi eventi in occasione di Ottobre Rosa per sensibilizzarvi nei confronti della prevenzione del carcinoma mammario. Lo screening mammografico, infatti, ha dimostrato la sua efficacia nel corso degli anni, specialmente all’interno di popolazioni con un’elevata adesione alle chiamate. Tuttavia, non si può trascurare l’importanza dell’autopalpazione e delll’esame obiettivo presso lo Specialista Senologo, che molte volte rappresentano il primo passo per una diagnosi precoce, soprattutto nelle fasce d’età non considerate dallo screening. Nella nostra popolazione di studio le pazienti affette da carcinoma mammario di età inferiore a 40 sono poco meno del 10% e quelle con età superiore a 75 invece superano ormai il 20%, anche grazie all’evidente aumento della spettanza di vita media nel sesso femminile. Per questa ragione, non è più possibile abbassare il livello di attenzione nei confronti di tutte le fasce d’età, per combattere con buon tempismo un tumore con una prevalenza tutt’oggi così elevata.
